Dynasty's Newest 2009 NFL Draft Prospect: Kevin Grant

Kevin Grant

Kevin Grant #30 Akron University

Dynasty Football 2009 NFL Draft Prospect

Kevin Grant is a 6′2 250-pound senior inside linebacker for the Akron Zips.  He led the Zips’ in tackles this past season and possesses an uncanny ability to find the football.  Kevin’s extreme dedication and leadership allowed him to play and start in ALL forty-nine Akron football games over the past four years. Kevin truly is half man, half machine.

Growing up in Herndon, Virginia, Kevin attended Herndon High School, where he was a two-sport athlete playing football and basketball.  As a senior, Grant Earned first-team all-district, all-region and All-?State.  He was also named to the 2003 George Michael “Golden 11″ and ?honored as the Defensive Player of the Year for his district and region.  Upon leaving high school, Grant ?broke the Herndon single-season tackle record with 139 stops in ?2003.

He decided to take his studies and athletics to the University of Akron Zips.  While Virginia Tech and many other great institutions were looking at Kevin’s talents, he ultimately chose Akron.

He took a redshirt the 2004 season, until his redshirt freshman season in 2005, when he started in all 13 games at the bandit ?position in the Zips tough defense.  By the end of the season Kevin was fourth on the team in tackles with 73 and ranked third in ?sacks with 4.5. He recorded a season-high seven solo tackles at Middle ?Tennessee State, and finished with eight total stops on the night.   He was honored as a third team CollegeFootballNews.com Freshman All-?American and The Sporting News Honorable Mention Freshman All-?American team and ended the season earning the Harry “Doc” Smith Award as the top freshman on the ?Zips squad.

After an impressive redshirt freshman season, Kevin The Machine Grant did only better in his 2006 sophomore campaign.   He started all 12 games at middle linebacker and ranked second ?on the team with 87 tackles overall, one shy of team leader John Mackey’s ?88. He was tied for second on the team with eight tackles ?for losses. The Machine continued his consistency in tackling and ranked 22nd in the MAC with an average of 7.2 ?tackles per game.  He had an impressive day at Kent State, earning a career high 15 tackles, including career-high eight solo stops.  KG ended the season as the defense’s Most Valuable Back ?(Linebackers and Secondary) by the Akron coaching staff for the 2006 ?season.

The following season Kevin showed his toughness and dedication all year long, leading the team on defense starting and playing in all 12 games.   He ranked third on the team with 74 stops. The machine recorded 11 tackles at Indiana, and had double digit stops with 10 at Bowling Green, leading all Zips.  Kevin anchored the defense and had at least six tackles in a game ?eight times and at least one tackle for loss in four of Akron’s last ?six games, including two each at Buffalo, at Bowling Green and at ?Miami.  After the end of the 2007 season he was rewarded for his hard work and leadership by earning third team All-MAC from the league’s ?coaches.

Prior to the Zips 2008 season Kevin was tabbed preseason second team All-Mid-American Conference ?by Athlon and was nominated as a captain on defense. When the season got underway the true terminator came out in Kevin as he continued to lead the team playing and starting in every game and recorded a team leading 85 tackles including 50 solo stops. Kevin additionally led the squad with 8.5 tackles for loss and with 4.0 sacks. Grant amassed 319 tackles in his career, making him 18th-best among active NCAA players.  He earned 36.0 career tackles for losses putting him 21st among active NCAA players.  The machine ranks in the Top 25 in tackles and tackles for loss in the NCAA.

The Machine amazingly started and played in ALL 49 games during his collegiate career and was donned captain during his senior season.  This shows that he has a lot of leadership abilities and is mentally tough to play throughout the entire year.   At the NFL level, the seasons are longer and the games are much tougher. Kevin’s stats show that he has what it takes to stay healthy for an entire season, physically and mentally; something that many amazing college players cannot claim (Knowshon Moreno, Chris Wells, Percy Harvin). With the assets he already has along with his continued drive to improve his speed and overall abilities, Grant has tremendous upside. Kevin’s consistency and determination on and off the field will make him an asset to any NFL team.

We are extremely excited about the addition of Kevin to the Dynasty family.  Go ahead and check out his new website: http://dynastyreps.com/grant/

IMG Into QB's

IMG CLOSE TO DEAL TO REPRESENT MATTHEW STAFFORD FOR MARKETING WORK

By Liz Mullen, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal

Matthew Stafford Nearing
Representation Deal With IMG
IMG is close to a deal to represent Georgia QB Matthew Stafford – potentially the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL Draft – in marketing work and other off-the-field endeavors, sources said. Powerful IMG agent Alan Zucker, who reps Colts QB Peyton Manning, Giants QB Eli Manning, and Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson for marketing work, will represent Stafford in a deal that has been agreed to in principle, but not yet signed, sources said. IMG spokesperson Jim Gallagher would not comment.

Zucker is not certified by the NFLPA to represent NFL players in club contract talks. Stafford, an underclassman, had not yet picked an NFL contract advisor, and NFLPA-certified agents were only allowed to speak with him starting yesterday under the union’s so-called junior rule.

RIP Coach Yow

RIP Coach Kay Yow from NC State.  You were the equivalent to Jimmy V on the Ladies side and your name will be remembered forever.

Former Agent and PAO Founder Arrested

In reading the Sports Business Journal today I came across this article by By Liz Mullen & Daniel Kaplan.

Authorities arrested a former NFL agent in Arizona Thursday who was accused of violating his probation in Florida, stemming from a '03 case in which he was charged with taking more than $100,000 from a client. SCOTT HELFAND, who has since founded a Web site that caters to professional athletes, was on probation in a first-degree grand theft case involving former NFLerOLIVER GIBSON, Florida officials said. He violated his probation in '04 by not checking in with his probation officer, the state Department of Corrections said. Helfand in '07 founded ProAthletesOnly.com, a Web site that provides news and information geared to professional athletes. Several current or former NFL, MLB, NHL and other athletes have been listed in press releases on the site as partners or board members of the company, but many of those releases have been taken off the site in recent weeks. Those athletes include former NFLer TROY VINCENT, Cardinals RB EDGERRIN JAMES, Redskins WR SANTANA MOSS, Canucks LW DARCY HORDICHUK, free agent 2B JUNIOR SPIVEY, former MiLBers KENNY KELLY and SAM MARSONEK and tennis player VICTORIA HUNT. Helfand, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing involving the site, spoke to SportsBusiness Journal early last week and said, "The players and athletes that are involved in the Web site did not invest any money in the company." Asked whether the athletes listed as partners in the company knew that he had been charged in a case involving another athlete, Helfand said, "Some of them know." Helfand voluntarily gave up his NFLPA agent certification in '02, before he pleaded guilty in the case. An NFLPA official had no comment Thursday evening. Attempts to reach Helfand after his arrest were unsuccessful. He was originally reached through a contact number on press releases on the ProAthletesOnly.com site, but Helfand's name and phone number were removed from the releases on the site last Thursday. The state attorney's office in Miami-Dade County has begun an extradition process to bring Helfand before a judge in Miami, a prosecutor said.

Sports Law RULES

Lately, I have been reading a lot from my favorite blog and sites.  Here is an old post by Darren that summarizes the rules of Sports Law and what a student like myself or others who aspire to become agents should do in order to attain that goal. Below I have listed the steps that Darren has advised others to follow, all of which I agree with and have been doing lately.

1. Send letters to all teams/sports agencies.
2. Network at sports lawyers’ conferences
3. Be willing to earn very little compared to your classmates
4. Write and publish legal scholarship about new topics
5. Obtain advice from law professors who enjoy your writing and may be a reference in the future
6. Do not only prepare yourself to be a lawyer-agent
7. Be flexible, opportunistic, and agressive
8. Take these classes in law school: Antitrust, Drafting (as many drafting classes as are offered), Negotiation, Arbitration, Labor Law, Intellectual Property (including trademark and copyright), Federal Income Tax, Estate Planning/Wills/Estate Tax, Immigration Law (especially for those interested in baseball and basketball work) and Sports Law.
9. Never eat lunch alone (networking matters!)

First Career Game Winning Buzzer Beater

THE KING, Lebron James, has finally done it.  Lebron had 34 points and hit the game winner tonight in Oakland against the Golden State Warriors, giving Cleveland a 106-105 W.  This was amazingly the first career game winning shot of his career.  Lebron seems to be dominant against Golden State but this shot could be a huge, pivotal point in his career.

In my opinion this was one of the differences between Kobe and Lebron.  Making the clutch shot, not just taking that shot.  Lebron needs to get plenty more of these in his career in order for him to be the best and for the Cav's (or whatever team he plays for in the future-Knicks) to win games.  After over five years in the league, all I can say to LBJ is that it's about time.  Now I can keep telling my roommate that Lebron will be better than Kobe someday, and actually have him believe it now.

A DUBS

Hokies Down Undefeated Deacs

Last night, the Virginia Tech Hokies basketball team beat the #1 team in the land, the undefeated Wake Forrest Demon Deacons.  The Hokies had played poorly all year but when the ACC regular season gets started anything can happen.  Tech has beat two #1 teams since getting into the ACC from the Big East.  However, they have lost 3 buzzer beaters to #1 teams to go along with the two previous wins.  I have a bet with my roomate for a General Tsao's dinner, on VT not making the tournament this year, just like last year.  Mike believes that Tech is better than last years team with Deron Washington, but I do not agree with that.  All I have to say is SEE YA WAKE!!!! Thanks for helping out the DUKE Blue Devils become the #1 team in the nation again.

X-Games Are Here

They're back!!! The X games are officially back and starting today January 22nd in Aspen.  ESPN has decided to keep the X Games in Aspen until 2012.  Below is some info about the games this year and how the economic hardship has hurt, even the X games and Aspen crowds, as less sponsors are in Colorado this year.  Click HERE to see the entire X Games event schedule.

ESPN and the Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) yesterday reached an agreement to keep the Winter X Games in Aspen/Snowmass through '12. The event, which originally rotated venues on a regular basis, has been held in Aspen since '02. Winter X Games 13 debuts today (ESPN). The deal marks the third agreement between ESPN and the ASC, and ESPN X Games Managing Dir Rick Alessandri said, "Aspen has been a terrific partner. They've always been enthusiastic. They've always been supportive of our desire to keep growing our event." ASC officials have conceded hosting the X Games costs the venue money, and ASC VP/Sales & Events John Rigney indicated that "investing capital to fund on-mountain improvements such as snowmaking and a new 22-foot superpipe, providing equipment and manpower, among others, constitute a 'significant' portion of the firm's annual operating budget." Rigney: "It's a massive laundry list. But the caveat there is that, in my humble opinion, it's been worth every bit." Rigney said ESPN "gives us the exposure, gives us the distribution channels and platforms to continue to grow." Kaplan added, "It fills up the town in January, when we're normally empty." ASC indicated that attendance at the event has "nearly doubled" since '02, and last year's telecasts drew a record 863,000 HHs, up 17% from '07 (Jon Maletz, ASPEN TIMES, 1/22).

LET THE GAMES BEGIN: In Denver, Scott Willoughby notes that with the addition of the snowmobiling best-trick contest at X Games, the "buzz about the sport is even louder as some" riders may attempt a double backflip. Stiepock: "Freestyle snowmobilers have the respect of that crowd, and yet they are also drawing the snowboard and ski crowd" (DENVER POST, 1/22). In Aspen, Curtis Wackerle reported the 22-foot halfpipe is the biggest in X Games history, and the same size that will be used at the 2010 Vancouver Games (ASPEN DAILY NEWS, 1/11).

Beckham Starts Surprisingly

Beckham gets surprising starting nod

ROME (AP) - David Beckham has been given a surprising start in his official Serie A debut in AC Milan's game against AS Roma.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said Saturday that it would be "difficult" to start Beckham on Sunday because the former England captain has been inactive for two months.

However, Beckham was listed to line up alongside Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf in Milan's midfield - behind Kaka, Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato in attack.

Beckham has joined Milan on a two-month loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Rex To JETS

Rex Ryan, the Ravens Defensive Coordinator has reportedyly going to sing a 4yr contract as the next New York JETS head coach.  Ryan takes over for the recent Cleveland Brown hire, Eric Mangini.  I like this decision by the JETS.  Ryan will help strenghten our defense and add some toughness to our offense, hopefully. More on this decision by the J E T S from me to come.....

GOOBAMA

Today, January 20th, 2009 is President Obama's first official day in office, as he has not been innagurated into the White House.  A history making event, with an amazing record breaking number of live viewers whitnessed Obama take the Presidency from George W. Bush today.  Welcome CHANGE into America.  Hopefully Obama can jump start the economy in the USA and help with unemployment and auto industry here in Michigan (to mention only a few of the major problems).  Only time will tell but today is the first step.  Welcome Barack!!

Blazers Miles Away From Resolving Situation

Below is an article I wrote for SportsAgentBlog.com on the recent Darius Miles situation, enjoy!

darius-milesIf the name Darius Miles did not bring fear to the Portland Trailblazers organization when seeing him on the court, it does now.  Miles is causing a BIG stir in the NBA, affecting all NBA teams and getting the NBA Players Association involved.

When Darius Miles was under contract with the Trailblazers he suffered what was thought to be a career ending knee injury.  The injury caused him to have micro-fracture surgery in 2006 and he was released by the Blazers in April 2008 after not participating in any NBA games for two seasons.

One of the big screen actors on The Perfect Score, with Scarlet Johansen, Miles started out this pre-season on the world champion Boston Celtics roster and was waived by the Celtics after playing in six pre-season games. He later signed with the Grizzlies and played in two regular season games when he was released before his contract became guaranteed.

Last Friday was when all the chaos started. Miles officially became a free agent, having already participated in eight games this season. According to the NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Miles will be due $18 million by the Blazers if he plays in 10 total games this season. If he plays two more games with any team, the Blazers would owe him $18 million from their prior contract with Miles.  This additional sum would put the Blazers over the cap this year and force the organization to pay a luxury tax (much like the MLB has in place), of around $8 million for this season.

The Blazers were aware of this and even thought of picking up Miles again, just to sit him so he could not play the remaining two games on his contract (similar to Marbury’s ordeal in NY). The craziness officially began when Miles signed a ten-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.  This short-term deal to see how Miles could do, scared the Trailblazers enough for team President Larry Miller to send out threatening emails to all 29 other NBA teams.

In Miller’s email sent on Tuesday he threatened to sue any organization if a team attempted to sign Miles to “damage the franchise financially.”   He threatened and challenged all 29 other NBA franchises in one email.

The NBA responded a few days ago by sending out a league wide email which stated: “This is to inform you that Darius Miles has cleared waivers as of 10 a.m., EST, Friday, Jan. 9, 2009. He is now a free agent. The NBA has received the e-mail sent last night by Portland to all teams. Under league rules, teams are free to sign Darius Miles to a Uniform Player Contract if they wish to secure his services as a player, and any such contract would be approved by the NBA.”

NBAPA executive director Billy Hunter later expressed his disappointment in Portland’s threat on Miles and added that the players union will be filing a grievance against the organization as well.  The NBAPA believes that the league should have no collusion and that a player should be able to participate in the NBA as long as he is physically able to.

To make matters worse, the Grizzlies hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers and not only did Darius Miles play in the game, but he added 13 points in the Memphis loss.

The only good news for the Portland Trailblazers is that the NBA will not file a grievance against the organization for the President’s threatening emails.

With Miles looking good in his return it appears likely that he will play again in Memphis’s game this today.  While the Grizzlies are hoping for a big game out of Miles, the Blazers are hoping he will wind up on waivers ASAP and not lacing up his Nikes.

We will see in ten days if Miles get a contract extension, or if Memphis only intended to ruin Portland’s summer by busting their salary cap space and causing additional fines.   Now that all emails and threats have been issued with no action, only time will resolve this situation.

NSELS National Sports & Entertainment Law Society

It has arrived.  The day has finally come where law students and law school Sports and Entertainment Law Societies can unite and create a
National organization.  Two go getter's from Vermont Law School (VLS), Andrew Delaney and William Rothstein, both students of the great sports law professor Michael McCann (Sports Law Blog), created the NSELS only a month ago.  It now has a great website, that is up and running and can help any law school form an Sports and Entertainment Law Society.

Please check out the site and get involved if you are a current law student or professional.  You can email me (zak@nationalsels.org) or email Andrew Delaney if you have any questions about the organization.  I have been in contact with Mr. Delaney and he always gets back quickly and with great enthusiasm about the club.

The club will soon be incorporated sometime in mid-February and should expand tremendously will your help.  I am the current President of the Cooley Entertainment Law Society (ELS) and on the board for this newly created NSELS and would love to spread the word about both.  Uniting the sports and entertainment law societies nation wide will only help create stronger bonds and give individuals a leg up in the rough world of sports and entertainment agents.  Below are some words about the initiation of the NSELS.

From the small northeastern state of Vermont, a couple of law students are determined to start an organization that will unite sports & entertainment law societies in law schools around the country. Andrew Delaney and Will Rothstein have recently created the National Sports & Entertainment Law Society. Their stated goal is to create a national network of sports and entertainment law societies. If you are a current law school student and are interested in sports and/or entertainment law, I suggest you check out the site and reach out to one of the two founders. My communication thus far has been with Mr. Delaney. I guarantee he will get back to you about any questions you may have.

Some law schools have extensive sports and entertainment programs. Marquette, Tulane, and UCLA are institutions that offer a variety of classes in both areas. Would you be surprised if I told you that University of Florida offers no sports nor entertainment law classes? Occasionally, UF offers a Sports Law Seminar, capped at fifteen students (real nice when your school has about 1,200 students all interested in the subject). Oftentimes, the only way for a law student to get involved in entertainment and/or sports law is through a sports & entertainment law society. If your law school does not have one, the National Sports & Entertainment Law Society would like to help you get one started. If one already exists, but there is a need to expand its programs and infrastructure, NSELS will lend a hand as well.

Ronaldo Is FIFA POY

Christiano Ronaldo is announced as the FIFA World Player of the year for 2008.  After an amazing season with the Red Devils, helping them capture the EPL and champions league crowns, Ronaldo rightfully deserves the honors. I think he has a good chance of wining it again this year.

Wondolowski Brothers Interview

Matt Allinson CEO and Founder of The Real Athlete Blog, had a Great interview with the Wondolowski brothers of the MLS's Houston Dynamo.  In it he really hits some crucial issues regarding soccer players and representing soccer players.  Max Eppel of MESA is highlighted as the Wondolowski's newly acquired agent.  The piece shows why Max is such a great asset to any player as an agent and tells what most players are looking for in representation.

Matt's piece really goes in depth and even discusses issues about the MLS Players Union.  It is well worth the read for any potential soccer agents or even future MLS players.

ARPA

ARPA Group On LinkedIn

ARPAOn October 9, I suggested that we bring back ARPA, an organization that once served some worthy purposes in strengthening the sports agent profession.  ARPA stands for Association of Representatives of Professional Athletes, and was created in 1978 as a vehicle to introduce self-regulation into the profession.  After publishing the post, I received tons of emails from agents across the world, lending a hand in helping re-organize ARPA into a club that may strengthen the image of sports agents, in general.  I believe that before we create a yearly meeting, it is important that we establish a strong framework.

Last week, I created an ARPA group on LinkedIn.  If you are currently an agent representing clients in any professional sport throughout the world, I implore that you join the group.  You may request to join by clicking here Let’s all make one of our New Year’s Resolutions to not only find individual success, but bring prosperity to our profession as a whole.

Ikea Game

What's an "Ikea Game?"
please excuse the language from the definitions in this post...thank you

n. A game which results in so much anger, frustration and disappointment that it causes one to destroy anything and everything in their living room, leading to a trip to Ikea.

Alternate names: "Game that makes you want to tear your fucking heart out and feed it to Jeffrey Dahmer," "I fucking hate sports," "Kill me now."

NATE ROB' Blocks Crittenton

Check out this block by the BIG MAN, Nate Robinson last night.  At only 5"8/9 Nate should not be blocking people like this. BUT he is and he is sick nasty.  It was only a couple of years ago that nasty Nate blocked YAO. This block on Javaris Crittenton was the "Block of the Night."

Mayor Steelerstahl of Pittsburgh

In lue of this weekends big game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh
Mayor Luke R. Ravenstahl has changed his name to Luke Steelerstahl.  As amazing as it sounds, this is a true story.  A mayor in Pittsburgh was named Ravenstahl and actually got elected by the people, and that same mayor changed his last name only temporarily, to support his home town STEELERS.  Although, the change is only temporary, the mayor has gone so far as to change the nameplate on his office door. He said he wants to "eliminate the Ravens just as the Steelers will on Sunday."

The prefix -stahl, in German, actually means steel to begin with.  However, it is the thought that counts, and when the word Raven is in your last name and you are a Pittsburgh mayor, something needs to be done.

Today @ 5= Underclassman Deadline

Today is the final day that any underclassman can declare for the NFL draft.  Today at 5 is the deadline to get your draft paperwork in and many underclassman are doing so.  The Heisman winner Sam Bradford and his counterpart, Tim Tebow, have BOTH decided to go back to college for their Junior and Senior seasons.  However, the dynamic threat called Percy Harvin on the National Champion Gators has decided it is time.  Brandon Spikes the Gators biggest threat on defense will stay with Tebow, to boost his draft stock.

USC QB Mark Sanchez has decided the opposite, declaring that he will be an NFL quarterback this April 26 draft day.  Sanchez will probably be the #1 QB picked on draft day, only Matt Stafford will threaten his high draft position.  Many others including Michael Crabtree, Hakeem Nicks (UNC) and Darius Hayward-Bey (MD) are all top receivers and are underclassman heading out early.  Here are some more stories about underclassman leaving and staying, including a complete list of ALL the underclass who have declared so far....

Soccer Fans Almanac

I found a soccer almanac for the next year or so when reading an article in Sports Illustrated by Greg Lala's.  Below is the soccer almanac for the next year until 2010.  Any true soccer fans will know many of these dates already or have them up on their calendar already.

Jan. 16: The day after the MLS SuperDraft. Unless you're the GM of a team or the father of a highly touted prospect, you're not going to watch the MLS draft live on TV. You have better things to do, like sorting your recycling bin, shopping for a new belt, or, um, working. Besides, it's not like you've ever heard of any of the players. So wait a day and read the morning-after analysis.

Jan. 31: Winter transfer window closes. This is the last day U.S. international Oguchi Onyewu can move away from Standard Liège and into a league that doesn't include teams like K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen.

Feb. 11: U.S. vs. Mexico in 2010 World Cup qualifying. Soccer's best rivalry -- and by that, I mean in the whole world -- re-ignites in Columbus, Ohio. If you're a fan of either team, you need to be there, even if you have to undertake a Planes, Trains, & Automobiles-style journey ("Those aren't pillows!").
*Extra time: Jennifer Aniston celebrates her 40th birthday on this day, so regardless of how your team does, you have something worth celebrating.

March 19: MLS season begins. Seattle Sounders FC will host the New York Red Bulls on national TV in the opener. Odds that it rains? Two-to-one. Odds that Freddy Ljungberg plays? Two-to-one.

May 27: UEFA Champions League final. A perfect excuse to skip out of work on a Wednesday afternoon and drink beer with singing Europeans. Like you needed another one.

May 30: FA Cup final. The way Brad Friedel's and his Aston Villa teammates are going this season right now, there's more than a decent chance we'll see an American in the final. If the Villans make it, Big Brad -- and his goalkeeping Mini-Me, Brad Guzan -- will be the first American(s) in the FA Cup final since Tim Howard won it with Manchester United in 2004.

June 15: U.S. vs. Italy, Confederations Cup group stage. This World Cup warm-up tournament, being held in South Africa, will tell us more about Bob Bradley's ability to coach in the big-time than anything else. Certainly more than a friendly against Sweden's B-team. First up: reigning World Champion Italy. Perfetto! I can't think of a better way for the Nats to demand the respect they deserve than to earn a result against the Azzurri. How badly do you think Pablo Mastroeni wants to play in this one?

June 18: U.S. vs. Brazil, Confederations Cup group stage. A possible rematch of the Jozy Altidore-Alexandre Pato contest from the '07 Under-20 World Cup. Altidore won that clash with two goals. Something tells me AC Milan's little duck might turn the tables this time.

June 21: Egypt vs. U.S., Confederations Cup group stage. Unfortunately, this is not the "gimme" some U.S. fans might think it is. I watched the Pharaohs at last year's African Cup of Nations, and they are awesome. Good luck, boys.
*Extra time: June 21 is Father's Day, so maybe Michael Bradley will deliver a special gift to his dad.

July 1 & 8: Copa Libertadores finals. We Americans, for some reason, are very Eurocentric when it comes to our soccer. Yet the best players in the world come from South America, and they tend to show up on South America's biggest stage a few years before they become stars in the Old World (See: Pato, AC Milan). The final series is often a controversial circus that makes wonderful entertainment.

July 21-26: U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships. I've never really been interested in saying "I saw them before they were stars." But maybe you are. The tournament, held this year in Lancaster, Mass., showcases the crème de la crème of American youth soccer.

Late July: MLS All-Star Game at Rio Tinto Stadium. Despite Real Salt Lake's "partnership" with Real Madrid, I'm predicting Barcelona will be the opponent. Most likely, MLS will grant its Miami expansion bid sometime in the next month or so, and this will be Barça's way of saying thanks. That and it will make sure to let the MLSers win.

Aug. 11: Mexico vs. U.S. in World Cup qualifying. The Estadio Azteca is one of the shrines of the game: the color, the wave, the 120,000 screaming Mexicans. If you can swing it, go. But buy yourself a green El Tri jersey first to disguise yourself, just in case the U.S. gets a result.

Sept. 1: Summer transfer window closes. Let's start up the rumor mill now: Marvell Wynne to Newcastle.

Mid-Fall: Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 released. I'm only guessing on this date, but it's usually released around this time, and when it is, video jocks around the world cry tears of joy onto their mustard-stained Manchester United replica jerseys.

Mid-November: MLS Cup final. Maybe the MLS honchos will hear that whisper on the wind that says the final should not be held in a neutral site but should be hosted by the higher-seeded team. Remember the 60,000 that showed up at Foxboro to watch the 2002 final between New England and Los Angeles?

A few days later: Expansion draft for Philadelphia Whatchamacallits. I'm putting money down right now that James Riley will be picked up in his third successive expansion draft.

January 2010: Second Annual American Soccer Fan's Almanac published.
